Back to school: it’s time for indoor shoes, trainers and all-season boots

A new school year means new exercise books, a school bag, a pencil case – and plenty of other essentials. Children will need indoor shoes for school or nursery, trainers for PE and leisure, and all-season boots for the coming autumn.

How to choose slippers that will fit children well?

Colour and favourite designs are important to children, but they shouldn’t be the primary factors when making a choice. First of all, you need to find styles that match the length, width and shape of the foot. From these, the child can then choose the slippers they like.

Focus primarily on the following features:

• Plenty of room for the toes – the front of the slipper should match the shape and length of the foot and should not squeeze the toes at the front or sides.
• The right width and instep height – a slipper that is too narrow will pinch, whilst one that is too wide or high may not stay on the foot properly.
• Reliable fastening – Velcro or an elastic strap help to adjust the slippers to the foot. The child should also be able to put the slippers on and fasten them by themselves.
• Good heel support – the slippers should not slip off or come off significantly whilst walking.
• Breathable material – this helps to reduce unpleasant sweating of the feet in a heated classroom or nursery.
• A flexible and durable sole – this should allow for natural foot movement whilst withstanding the rigours of everyday school life.

Before buying, also check the specific requirements of the school or nursery. Some may, for example, require slippers with a light-coloured sole or a specific type of footwear – such as closed-toe shoes.
